"Delta Bluegrass Company’s commitment toward the development of native California water-conserving sod alternatives is laudatory. Their California Native Sod Program answers our plea as landscape architects for new and innovative alternatives in the sod industry that advance environmental sustainability in our thirsty state. We applaud the vision and efforts that Delta Bluegrass Company has invested in bringing us to this threshold of new possibilities for the environments we design."

"The native sod being produced by Delta Bluegrass is demonstrating excellent potential on the test plots we have installed at Hedgerow Farms. We installed 5 different mixes in April and watered them several times until they appeared established. They received no water after early June. We expect them to green back up after watering or receiving rain this fall."

"Pacific Coast Seed is very pleased to be working with Delta Bluegrass on the production of CA native perennial sods. We believe that the blends in their portfolio have many applications in the urban, suburban and natural landscape. There's been a long-standing disconnect for some clients who have had expectations for fast establishment and prompt weed control of native grass plantings. Now there are sod products that can match up the need for near instant results and provide the native material desired by the designers and clients. As the planting of large-scale native grass and forbs continues to expand, we believe that professional growers such as Delta Bluegrass will play an ever-increasing role in scientifically producing native sods to meet this growing demand. As there's been a movement from turfgrass seeding to turfgrass sodding over the last 40 years, there could well be an equal transition from native seeding to native sodding in the years ahead."

"I recommend the use of your Native Mow Free and Native Bentgrass which I call "mowing optional" as with each blend I mow infrequently and water the same way. Of course we have summer fog which augments the moisture in the root and top zones.

PEOPLE ARE UNDER THE IMPRESSION THAT THESE SOD FORMS ARE INSTALLED BECAUSE OF THEIR WATER CONSERVING CHARACTERISTICS; HOWEVER THEY MORE IMPORTANTLY SAVE THE PLANET'S ATMOSPHERE. Small motors on lawn mowers often produce the same emissions in one hour of operation that moderately fuel efficient automobiles emit in driving them over 350 miles. Edgers and blowers are even worse creating the same emissions in one hour that the car would travelling 1000 miles. This carbon fact is much more significant for our environment."

"In these times of climate change and water shortages in California, Delta Bluegrass is producing a fantastic line of drought tolerant California native grass sod blends. There are six blends aimed at reducing irrigation and maintenance input adapted to the long California Mediterranean dry season with minimum irrigation input. There are three urban landscape blends that include a native fine fescue mow-free blend sod, a pure native bentgrass sod, and a very drought tolerant sod of native red fescue and junegrass.

In addition, Delta Bluegrass is pioneering native biofiltration/restoration sod blends and two adaptable sod blends that include the most drought tolerant native bunchgrasses including the State bunch grass, purple needlegrass. These sod blends express their composition according to the irrigation and mowing regimens that can be allowed to dry to a golden color in the summer or alternatively can receive supplemental irrigation reviving the stand in the late summer months.

Delta Bluegrass has an evaluation program to chart the blends at numerous installations in the state gaining insight on the type of irrigation regimens appropriate for the desired species composition. Finally, Delta Bluegrass is launching a more focused research and development program that is evaluating the drought tolerant native warm season grasses that are especially adapted to the warm inland valleys and especially the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valley".

"This farm (Delta Bluegrass) is the first in the world to produce large volumes of commercially available California Native Grass Sod. We have worked with researchers in the industry and now is the day Native Grass Sod is a viable option. Native Grass Sod has a niche for Caltrans and restoration type projects. It can be used for bio-strips and swales or other applications where you need to insure a quick/established cover of a native grass".
